'Nova Nova!' & 'Angelus ad Virginem' 'News News!!!' & 'The Angel and the Virgin' - English Medieval Carols, Anon., 13th century. Arranged and performed by Daniel Mantey - Music All Sorts; hurdy-gurdy, soprano and alto recorders, & hand-bells, with Kenji Mantey and Ami Mantey - vocals. These are two VERY old Christmas Carols, two of the earliest, and both about the Annunciation; Angel Gabriel's visit to Mary. The first really is like a 'Hear-yee, hear-yee, read all about it' call. And that is Kenji calling out the first 'Nova novas.' I use a very simple ensemble as would have been likely used in the 13th Century, and certainly children would have joined in and sung these carols! (I have heard different rhythmic versions of the opening; this is mine.) The second is in slightly more confusing Old English, but can be figured out when you see the words (not sure if hearing them helps?). What a great tune! I think Chaucer has one of his characters singing this tune as he travels to Canterbury in one of his Tales? There is a polyphonic version, but could not track it down, so wrote my own extra part in the style (on the alto recorder after the sung verse). I have always (since I learned these pieces nearly 40 years ago!) played these two together, and I used to always do them on bag-pipes! The hurdy-gurdy is just right. This track is on my Winter CD, recorded about 3 years ago, when Kenji was 9 and Ami 11. Happy holidays!!!
