The oboe is made from a tree that grows only in East Africa. Drawing upon a traditional Kurya tune, and aiming for a Western Jazz form, we collaborated to create this great piece that we called Tree of Tanzania. We were still rehearsing when this was filmed and the final version was recorded on CD and is even better. The Kurya instruments are Litungu (lyre), zeze (violin), kirongive (flute), maghorro (shakers), and lilandi ( a horn made from giant squash). The collaboration was made possible by Brenda's Global Connections grant from Meet the Composer (funded by the Ford Foundation) and The African Blackwood Conservation Project which lifts people out of poverty by having them replant and protect the blackwood trees (also known as mpingo, grenadilla, pau preto) from which oboes, clarinets, bagpipes, flutes, some recorders and some guitars are made.
