This is the second half of Kraftwerk's 'Trans Europe Express' (TEE), but I will let you refer to my other 'TEE' versions for all my chit-chat on and about the piece and my versions...but in a nutshell: the Kraftwerk masterpiece had been on my list for about ten years to arrange for 'early instruments,' finally done a few weeks back, polished up with the addition of the concluding 'Metal on Metal' half of the complete song yesterday, and HERE, 'Metal on Metal' alone as a 'heavy metal' clavichord solo! Now a word about clavichords. Yes, they are quiet, and certainly one of the quietest instruments around, but NOT the absolute quietest. And when you are sitting at, and playing, a well-built, well-tuned, well-regulated clavichord, and playing it well (!), it can have a lot of sound! Might not be so loud to anyone else around, but depends on the style of clavichord and its characteristics. The instrument WAS sort of an acoustic accident. The sound you hear is just the peripheral sound of the 'one half' of a string vibrating when hit by a metal tangent. The other side is dampened by a piece of cloth. The tangent stays in contact with the string, so the string is never really ...

The highly original style is further re-enforced by the musicians' original compositions, based on traditional Finnish and Scandinavian pelimanni music. Although the name Blatentsaine -- picked by the ensemble from a Karelian lullaby -- literally means "newborn", this band shares a long history of making music. The members had been playing together in various duos and trios even before their new group, Blatentsaine, was born in 2004 as a student ensemble at the Sibelius Academy Folk Music Department. Academic year 2004-2005 saw Blatentsaine concentrating on a polska performance entitled Palo. The group composed the music for this full-length dance production, parts of which were seen and heard at the Tanssin Taigaa evening at Kulttuuriareena Gloria. Blatentsaine has been increasingly busy recently, playing gigs at Finland's biggest folk music festivals, as well as at clubs and private functions. Their versatile repertoire also has enabled visits to schools, where they have introduced children to the world of folk music. On the 2007 Folklandia Cruise, Blatentsaine was named the Kantele Ensemble of the Year by the Finnish Kantele Association (Kanteleliitto). The DVR670 is equivalent, except it has a tuner (and RF coaxial input) to connect directly to antenna or cable line and record TV. This model must be connected to an external tuner, such as a cable box, to record TV.
Unboxing the Toshiba DVR620 DVD/VCR-VHS recorder combo. Got this mostly to copy old VHS tapes to DVD. All the consumer/review sites said this was the best quality of these combo machines. The DVR670 is equivalent, except it has a tuner (and RF coaxial input) to connect directly to antenna or cable line and record TV. This model must be connected to an external tuner, such as a cable box, to record TV.

It's a tragedy of pop culture in the new millennium that starlets don't rush willy-nilly into the recording studio anywhere near as much as they used to. Goldie Hawn's sole foray into pop music -- originally released in 1972 on Warner Bros. after Laugh-In but before Steven Spielberg's Sugarland Express revealed her dramatic range as an actress -- isn't Golden Throats-level bad, surely to the disappointment of hipsters everywhere. Although Hawn's helium-pitched voice is a trifle thin and limited, the selection of material wisely plays to her strengths, with Dolly Parton's "My Blue Tears" and -- believe it or not -- Joni Mitchell's "Carey" both well-suited to her soprano vocals. In fact, the only really egregious errors aren't really her fault: the Frenchified "Butterfly," with its absurdly cheesy choral backing, wouldn't have sounded good sung by anybody, and the countrified take on Van Morrison's "I Wanna Roo You" has a botched arrangement that slaps on a vaguely oompah-style waltz-time arrangement that suits neither singer nor song.
