In 1970 Tutti Camarata produced an album "Tutti's Trombones" intended to exploit to the utmost the "great unexplored possibilities of the trombone". Picking some of the finest session and jazz trombone players in the United States the album became (at least for my generation) the gold standard of trombone playing and an iconic recording. Recorded at Camarata's own Sunset Sound Recorders studio in Hollywood, California he produced, arranged and conducted all the tracks and utilised state of the art recording equipment to achieve an absolutely superb landmark album. Track 10 (Just A Closer Walk With Thee) featured Gil Falco on solo trombone followed by Joe Howard. The album was re-mastered and re-released on CD in 1983 by Bainbridge Entertainment Co. (from which this recording is taken) based in Van Nuys, California. No copyright is claimed for this recording and no violation of ownership intended. The original LP is really difficult to find but I believe there are a few copies of the 1983 CD still available. Try to get one as the quality is superb and you'll never tire of listening to it! A ground on 'The Leaves Be Green' - William Byrd, ca.1600 - performed by Daniel Mantey - Music All Sorts; soprano recorder, 2 alto recorders, tenor recorder, and bass recorder. This is absolutely one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. And William Byrd is one of my favorite composers as well. He is my "3 B's!" Originally composed for a quintett of viola da gambas, but fits the five recorders perfectly. Recorded during the Summer of 2010. On my 'Winter and beyond' CD. Enjoy!!! (Just listened, and no idea where all that rumbling is coming from; perhaps my sound is too loud for the little camcoder's mic, or it doesn't like all the high frequency flutes and recorders? I might need to re-do this one, darn, I just LOVE that video.)

Marantz CD-10 Restoration Finished

This player came in with an almost dead laser assembly and power supply problems. It was very difficult and very expensive to find a new CDM4/D36 mechanism, but as it turns out the laser head from CDM4/19 is identical and after about 2 months I finally found a NOS CDM4/19 and removed the new laser head from it and placed it inside the old CDM4/D36 mechanism. I also changed main power supply rectifiers and capacitors with better components and of course all of the remaining electrolytic capacitors because after 15 years they were causing weird problems from the servo to the dac Output opamps were also changed from ne5534 to opa627. It is interesting to note that this player has 2 tda1547 1-bit dacs, however after the rebuild it sounds much better than many new cd-players having 24-bit dacs I personally have never heard a 1-bit cd player to play that good.

Curing "Melted Belt Gunkification." The Wollensak 4800 vintage cassette recorder was made in Holland for the 3M Company by the Philips Company, known in the US as Norelco. The Wollensak audio machine is almost identical to the Norelco Carry-Corder 150, made in approx. 1967. The only differences seem to be surface cosmetics. It can be seen in some Wollensak ads from 1967. This vintage cassette machine was bought on E-Bay and arrived DOA (Dead On Arrival). Inspection of the cassette recorder revealed the cause of death as "Melted Belt Gunkification". This technological disease is sometimes called "Ampex Syndrome" and "Teac's Complaint" because it is the same on all these machines. The belts are not made of rubber, but a petroleum distillate mixture that breaks down over time, especially if the machine is stored and not used. The result is the belt literally melts into a type of "gunk", a gooey, sticky tar like substance that gets all over the inside of the machine. In spite of this slow degenerative technological disease, vintage audio machines that have died can be reborn when the "gunk" is cleaned out using simple ammonia based household window cleaning fluid (which dissolves the gooey mess) and the belts are then replaced (with rubber this time, please!) Curing "Melted Belt Gunkification." The Wollensak 4800 vintage cassette recorder was made in Holland for the 3M Company by the Philips Company, known in the US as Norelco. The Wollensak audio machine is almost identical to the Norelco Carry-Corder 150, made in approx. 1967. The only differences seem to be surface cosmetics. It can be seen in some Wollensak ads from 1967. This vintage cassette machine was bought on E-Bay and arrived DOA (Dead On Arrival). Inspection of the cassette recorder revealed the cause of death as "Melted Belt Gunkification". This technological disease is sometimes called "Ampex Syndrome" and "Teac's Complaint" because it is the same on all these machines. The belts are not made of rubber, but a petroleum distillate mixture that breaks down over time, especially if the machine is stored and not used. The result is the belt literally melts into a type of "gunk", a gooey, sticky tar like substance that gets all over the inside of the machine. In spite of this slow degenerative technological disease, vintage audio machines that have died can be reborn when the "gunk" is cleaned out using simple ammonia based household window cleaning fluid (which dissolves the gooey mess) and the belts are then replaced (with rubber this time, please!) Originally released in 1973 on Island records. it's released a hundred times since then on a variety of labels such as EG, Polydor, DGM, Opal LTD and probably more. Robert Fripp was a guitar player from King Crimson. Brain Eno was a keyboard player from Roxy Music. One day, Eno invited Fripp over to his house one day to play around with his new toy, which was two tape recorders that were rigged up so that if you played a sound into one it would be repeated later at a lower volume and again even later at an even lower volume. They recorded a track called "The Heavenly Music Corporation" in just two takes, using only a Les Paul guitar, The Fripp Pedalboard and Two Modified Revox A77 Tape Recorders. A year later, they hooked up in a studio and made another track called "Swastika Girls" and a synthesizer with a digital sequencer into the mix. The result was a prototype for all of the ambient music to come. The music consists of guitar swells and drones, looped and layered together into big walls of sound and harmonies. The music shifts and dips as Eno disables and enables the tape device, creating some dynamic and sonic textures. Back 1973, no other music sounded like this. It was poorly received and their record label hated it. No one was ready for music that was just meant for atmosphere. After recording "Outlaws Lament"at Bates Bros Recorders in Alabama, Sonny Tackett went to the studio to help record John Whitleys debut cd. Sadly John was killed in an auto accident and the cd was never released. Sonny hasa lot of video from these sessions, and we will be adding these as we go. This video shows bluegrass great Don Rigsby adding mandolin to one of Johns tracks,"Right Track ,WrongTrain". This is a good example of an accomplished musician, as we see Don warming up, learning the track, laying down the track, and overdubbing a short break.Since this recording , Don has become one of bluegrass's most sought after players.
